Staging and Production Server using Git.

If you are running a large project such as a website or ansible server you will want to test new features before pushing them into production then something like the following setup may work for you.

For this example imagine your url is mysite.ca and you want a development/staging site on a subdomain which is dev.mysite.ca

Setup

For websites

Create the website's domain and subdomain

Use Babel (ES6) with Sails JS

Inspired by this issue, with these instructions you should be able to get Babel transpiling your JS in Sails JS for the client side.

  1. Install Grunt Babel npm install --save grunt-babel
  2. Create a babel.js file under tasks/config and add something like the following:
module.exports = function(grunt) {

    grunt.config.set('babel', {
dev: {

Remove duplicates from js array (ES5/ES6)
var uniqueArray = function(arrArg) {
return arrArg.filter(function(elem, pos,arr) {
return arr.indexOf(elem) == pos;
});
};
var uniqEs6 = (arrArg) => {
return arrArg.filter((elem, pos, arr) => {
return arr.indexOf(elem) == pos;
});

Use one of these techniques to install node and npm without having to sudo. Discussed in more detail at http://joyeur.com/2010/12/10/installing-node-and-npm/ Note: npm >=0.3 is *safer* when using sudo.
echo 'export PATH=$HOME/local/bin:$PATH' >> ~/.bashrc
. ~/.bashrc
mkdir ~/local
mkdir ~/node-latest-install
cd ~/node-latest-install
curl http://nodejs.org/dist/node-latest.tar.gz | tar xz --strip-components=1
./configure --prefix=~/local
make install # ok, fine, this step probably takes more than 30 seconds...
curl https://www.npmjs.org/install.sh | sh
