Mapbox in Mapgive's Workshop in Piura-Peru

Mapbox in Mapgive's Workshop in Piura-Peru

image Before - After Map of Piura

Just last week, Ruben and I supported a workshop in Piura - Perú, lead by Tom Gertin from MapGive/US State departament. This event was promoted by Embassy Lima, MapGive, Piura University and Regional Goverment of Piura.

The presence of Mapbox was important not just because of the predominant Spanish audience, but the number of attendees. We were able to explain accurately the mapping techniques used with the attendees. We also used our experience of JOSM and OSM to engage attendees and get them excited about the project. **This Workshop helps to grow the OpenStreetMap Community in Peru

Background

Health Alliance International (HAI), a Center of the Department of Global Health at the University of Washington, has been working in solidarity with the government of Mozambique for over 25 years. HAI aims to improve access to, and effectiveness of, the public-sector healthcare system in a setting where Mozambique endured decades long civil wars and continues to have ongoing civil conflict.

In partnership with the Mozambican government, HAI is carrying out a community survey in Sofala and Manica provinces to better understand trends in child mortality, health, and well-being, with a focus on chronic disease as it becomes more and more important in Mozambique. Sofala and Manica provinces have been historically neglected relative to the south of Mozambique as they are the center of the opposition to the central government. Currently, over 9% of children in Sofala and 11% in Manica do not live to see the age of 5.

In addition to conducting this community survey in the spring of 2016, the last c

For Government, OpenStreetMap is More than Excellent Data. It's a Transformation.

Governments value OpenStreetMap data, no doubt. It is the base map data in times of crisis, like the West Africa Ebola response; and everyday to locate services, like X. As governments deepen their experience with OSM, the culture of open community data and open source seeps into business practice. This is leading to transformed relationships between institutions and the public, and within institutions, all while creating the best map in the entire world.

Over the first six months of my Presidential Innovation Fellowship, I've discovered and rediscovered nodes of incredible mappers in the federal government. The Peace Corps Mappy Hours with returned volunteers. The USGS National Map, making use of OSM infrastructure. Fantastic work across USAID. The incredible cartography and flexible data approach of NPMaps. Experiments with OSM and imagery processing at NASA. My own focus at State Department with MapGive.

perceived problem statement(s)

Institutions are taking on active roles in OpenStreetMap, particularly humanitarian use of OpenStreetMap. The distributed, networked, open structure of OSM poses a challenge to traditionally structured institutions. It should be easier to understand and engage in the OSM community, whether government, academic, or NGO.

State Department Humanitarian Information Unit has taken a lead in this space. But still faces its own challenges of transformation to a more openly functioning entity. It is therefore ideally placed to examine and address this gap.
