Some of you may remember that what is now called follow
in keybase, used to be called track
. This led to a heavily commented issue.
My suggestion to use recognize
wasn't because "it sounded nice", but because this was the most accurate description I could come up with for a non-trivial concept concerning crypto and identity — fields where god is in the details and NSA et al hide where they're absent or vague.
I don't claim my idea is or was the best, but facts are:
- It was ignored.
- The fact that the term
pin
wasn't (although it's bound to be confused with something irrelevant on pinterest and something compeletely different on ssh) suggests that @malgorithms et al actively chose not to dignifyrecognize
with an answer (not even a negative one). - In the end, they chose
follow
: people already know that word, so who cares what's the actual crypto concept it represents? Let's leave the details to god, NSA, et al.
Now this!?! by an unnamed(!?!) ok cupid employee (I'll call them Chris Coyne
for the sake of simplicity 😜).
I now understand that Chris
is not merely confused regarding crypto and identity, but either dangerously ignorant or "intentionally malgorithmic".
If I could only remember the username and/or email address I've used years ago at ok cupid for a month or 2, I'd delete it. Not that I now need it less than yesterday, but simply in order to conntribute to the statistics of "accounts deleted following that blog post".
- If you happen to have an ok cupid account you haven't been using for a while, I urge you to "vote with your feet" and delete it now. Every vote counts.
- If you're actively using ok cupid, I advise you to do the same. It's no longer hygenic.
- If you're using keybase for anything sensitive or important, there's no "clear and immediate danger", but remember that if you lie down with dogs, you might wake up with some cats missing.
