Wow, this is pretty sick.
Do you have an example without concurrent mode?

@Pawelsas Any reason you don't want it to be able to work without concurrent mode? Unless I'm mistaken it works for both, so definitely the right way to use it. 🤷‍♂️

@bvaughn question: On line 42 it appears you are violating the rules of hooks by potentially calling setState inside a render method. Is that an acceptable violation in this case? And if so, why?

EDIT: Nevermind, I just realized that my question is already answered in the official docs: https://reactjs.org/docs/hooks-faq.html#how-do-i-implement-getderivedstatefromprops

(But I will leave this comment here in case anyone else finds their way here and wonders the same thing.)
