Falsehoods programmers believe about time, in a single list

Falsehoods programmers believe about time

This is a compiled list of falsehoods programmers tend to believe about working with time.

Don't re-invent a date time library yourself. If you think you understand everything about time, you're probably doing it wrong.

Falsehoods

  • There are always 24 hours in a day.
  • February is always 28 days long.
  • Any 24-hour period will always begin and end in the same day (or week, or month).

Move Heroku Postgres to Amazon AWS RDS
  1. Prepare your RDS instance and [authorize access to it][1] (basically make it public).

  2. Put your app in maintenance mode:

    heroku maintenance:on
  3. Save the latest SQL dump of the DB:

%Q, %q, %W, %w, %x, %r, %s, %i

Perl-inspired notation to quote strings: by using % (percent character) and specifying a delimiting character.

Any single non-alpha-numeric character can be used as the delimiter, %[including these], %?or these?, %~or even these things~.

Strings

% or %Q

let length = hypot(end.x - start.x, end.y - start.y)

Setting up Thinking-Sphinx on Mac OS X using Homebrew

Out of the box, Homebrew does a default installation on Sphinx:

$ brew install sphinx

However, if you're using MySQL, the thinking-sphinx gem won't work because it needs to use MySQL libraries.

If you managed to screw up the first time, uninstall sphinx first:

$ brew remove sphinx
